Today, 10 years ago, Elsie Devine sat with her family and signed her pension book, had tea with her friend, and awaited her daughter, she was ready to come home, and was healthy enough to do so.
Today, 10 years ago, Elsie Devine was administered 135mg of Morphine (without justification or logic - without notification to her family) she fought for her life and within 24 hours was placed in a coma (with the addition of 50mg Chlorpromazine, 40mg Diamorphine, 40mg Midazolam).
You deserved the right to Life and WE will fight for that. It was taken from you. You deserved more.
Sir Peter Viggers: To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will publish the report prepared by Professor Richard Baker on events at Gosport War Memorial Hospital. [264625]
Ann Keen: The report from Professor Baker is not yet in the public domain, and we have to balance the legitimate public interest in openness against the rights of individuals named within the report in respect of personal details relating to them. We consider that there is a legitimate public interest in protecting their rights, at the present time, for those facts not to be disclosed—or at least for them to have a full opportunity to read the report and make their own comments upon it. Performing that assessment and taking all the Freedom of Information and Data Protection Act issues into account, we have concluded that on balance we should not yet issue it.
However, recognising the public interest in this whole issue, we do intend, once the inquests are concluded and the General Medical Council have decided what their action will be, and subject to the appropriate individuals identified in the report’s having had a chance to comment, to publish the Baker report, should publication still be relevant—that is to say, it may in the meantime become public knowledge from another official source, such as the proceedings of an inquest.
He has continually supported and praised the hospital staff and said enough is enough and you should all go away quietly. He even recently mentioned the 100K spent on this case when he alone can waste over 30K on a Duck Pond and refuse to repay the tax payer. The man is not a moron as I am sure he has intelligence but as an MP he is just another arm of the government defending Dr Barton. Asking for the Baker Report to be made public one assumes he believes it not to be damaging to the hospital. I cannot believe he has not read it.
We ALL need to work harder to save guard our elderly, we need to make change, we need to change the law to protect us all.

Inappropriate use of painkillers - GWMH

I was the Patient Affairs Officer at GWMH during part of the period post 1994 when this situation was ongoing. Part of my job was to return personal effects, help with funeral arrangements and pass death certificates to the families of the bereaved. I was concerned about the number of deaths occurring, particularly when on one afternoon alone (I worked 15 hours a week, from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. Monday to Friday) the next of kin of 8 separate patients, who had passsed away during the previous night, were waiting to see me. The cause of death on most of the death certificates was given as Pneumonia. I mentioned my concerns to several members of staff, and my manager, especially as I had been present on the wards when patients had been distressed and frightened about being prescribed painkillers administered via a driver. Some were frightened to go to sleep; they were afraid they would not wake up. I was always told I shouldn't involve myself in medical matters as it was none of my business. I have never been asked to give evidence at the inquests, or any of the enquiries. Eventually I resigned my post as I was unable to give the level of help necessary to the bereaved families in the 15 hours allocated to the post. In addition to counselling the bereaved, I arranged and attended funerals/cremations of those patients who had no family, and liaised with the Teasury Solicitor with regard to their affairs. I was also responsible for the patients' expenses and pensions, and the maintenance and auditing of the petty cash and other budgets on a weekly basis. The hospital's budgets were so tight, there was not enough money to fund the post in order to offer even a basic service.
This was posted in the Independent on Sunday; why have the Police not taken a statement from this person? Valdan should walked into a Police station and demand a statement should be taken.

On Friday 16th October I had my meeting at the CPS, outside waiting to speak to us stood a lonely reporter and cameraman. As we chatted, unbeknown to us the CPS were running around like headless chickens. Two Police Officers on horse back arrived and demand to see the reporter's IC, he was in shock as never before had he been subjected to such questioning.
As we were being ostracized, I am thinking where was the necessity by the CPS to request Police on horseback for 4 adults and the lonely reporter? At the meeting we were question if we had informed the press of our presence.... thankfully the press have finally woken up and having now seen and heard a lot of the evidence against Dr Jane Barton they are following our battle for Justice as we continue to do so.
